Women's and Gender History Symposium's organizing committee was very impressed with the proposal applications and believe this will be an incredible event. Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal. We were so pleased to see the range of critiques invoking our conference theme, "Exploitation." Today the WGHS Programming Committee notified those applicants whose proposals were accepted. Applicants have until January 16, 2013 to confirm their acceptance. Conference registration is $25. reviewing call for papers

The University of Illinois’ Department of History’s 2013 Women’s and Gender History Symposium organizing committee is now reviewing papers that engage the concept of exploitation broadly across time, genders and sexualities and beyond nation-state borders. While we valued essays that take historical approaches, they did not have to take an historical approach. We strongly encouraged papers that employ transdisciplinary approaches to understand various aspects of Women’s and Gender History/Studies. We especially encouraged submissions that focus on traditionally under-studied topics within the larger field of Women’s and Gender History/Studies, and among them, indigenous women and queer indigenous subjects. Proposals that examine transnational exploitation were also strongly encouraged. We also welcomed seeing papers that address how the exploited resist their condition. Possible topics in our coming symposium may include (but are certainly not limited to): media and exploitation; transnationalism and women’s and sender studies; transnational sexuality; exploitation of bodies; settler colonialism and exploitation; and the law and exploitation. The keynote speaker is filmmaker and film scholar Celine Parreñas Shimizu, Professor of Film and Performance Studies in the Asian American, Comparative Literature, Feminist and Film and Media Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
